TINSEL TALK
By Reyna Chien
From the first role you’ve played as a young, upcoming actress to now, where you an established star, how have you evolved in your craft?
I remember when I first started in this business; I used to name my acting class tapes, “Tinsel Road to Stardom.” Then the more I kept studying my craft I realized that stardom shouldn’t be the goal. So then I labeled my acting class to, “Tinsel’s Road to Acting Excellence.” I put my heart and soul into my characters and I evolve as a person not only as an actor with every role I play.
Are you involved in any charities? Tell us a bit about them and what you’re trying to accomplish, or give back, by being involved. What motivated you to do these charities specifically?
Over the years, I’ve been helped with DoSomething.org campaigns, and this year I was spokeswoman for the Make Art Save Art campaign. Which promoted the value of art education; since it’s the first subject to get budget cuts. Yet it’s essential to the development of youth. Being a young person can be challenging and I believe art helps them express their emotions in a healthy and positive way. It’s also why I teach acting and music classes to different Native American reserves when I’m not working. To help kids bring out their own unique talents. I don’t know where I would be if I didn’t have art in my life growing up.
I also have to support of St. Mary’s Food & Feeding America. DoSomething sent me there for the hunger campaign. And it opened my eyes to how many millions of people in the US alone go hungry. I even made a video about my experience. We think that hunger is just an issue in the rest of the world, but it’s right here in our own backyard. No one should go hungry, and if we can help then we should. I believe we are all put on this earth together, and it is our job to take care of one another. I could go on and on about philanthropy, but then the article would become a novel. LOL.
This year, you have a few indie films coming out that greatly differ from Twilight. Can you tell us about these films?
I have Black Forest which is airing on SyFy network this February 25th. It’s about the Fairytale characters that are mad at humans because we don’t believe in them anymore. So they kidnap a group of travelers. My character is the bridge between these two worlds. We filmed it in Bulgaria which was a lot of fun.
Avarice - which they’re just in the process of releasing. About this mysterious box that shows you whatever you desire. My character had a lot of pain in her life and has been running for most of it. When she stumbles upon this box it gives her a reason to face her fears.
Then to lighten it up, I did a comedy with Bronson Pelletier, Elyse Levesque (SGU), & Evan Williams (Degrassi). [Fishing Naked] A very funny coming of age tale. It’s like American Pie with a supernatural twist.
Any favorite books you’ve read lately?
One of my favorite books that I’m re-reading right now is called, “Cinderella was a Liar”. It’s this great book about what women are told what love is about, and what it actually is. The idea is, how do we really know what happened after Cinderella met her prince. Did they really live happily ever after, or could they be fighting right now? LOL.
A lot of people don’t know you’re also a singer. Can you tell us about your style of music?
The stuff I’m doing right now is like a blend of Dido and Norah Jones. I’m working on my first EP. It’s been an amazing process growing as a songwriter. I’ve been in the studio for the last month, fine tuning everything and really pushing myself. In the meantime I do have one of my songs up on iTunes, called “Letter” if anyone is curious.
Are there any other roles you’d like to fill? Producer, Writer, Director?
Yes, I’ve been working out a lot. I really want to book more action roles. I’m such a nice person in real life that it’s fun to play someone tough. When I was in Vancouver, one of my favorite things was training MMA & boxing. It’s such a stress release.
I have been told from other actors that I would be a good director, so eventually I’d like to direct a short film, and then go from there.
You’ve been many different characters over the course of your career. Are there any specific roles you’d like to be a part of as an actor?
I like drama, and if the right role came around, I’d be totally game, but I’d really love to do more comedy & action right now.
Name one person you would love to do a movie with.
Ryan Gosling. Have you seen Crazy, Stupid, Love? Hellooooo handsome. LOL. But seriously though, I think he’s an incredible actor.
Over the course of your career you’ve gotten roles in both small and the big screen, do you prefer one over the other? Or is it just the roles you receive that draw you to the projects?
Before, you had to pick being either a TV or film star that’s been thrown out the window lately. I think it’s about the role, and not the size of the screen. Well I mean, that’s always how I’ve thought of it.
Are there anything you specifically look for when reviewing a script or upcoming project because the type of roles you play are very diverse along with movies and films you’ve been in?
If I can read the script and memorize after a couple of reads, I know the writing is good. Also, I look for scripts that are not stereotypical. Being a woman of color, I’ve always looked for roles that showcase a strong image indigenous women. I want to book roles that push the boundaries, that challenge me, that make people go, “Oh, wasn’t thinking of her for that role, but I like it.”
What can fans and readers expect from Tinsel Korey in 2012? Are there any big projects or causes that will be out that we need to keep an eye out for and that you’d like to share?
Well, mainly my music. That is something that I’ve been passionately working on for a while. Though you never know in the business where you’re going to end up next.
I do have something in the pipelines that I’m really excited about, but I don’t like to say until I’m actually there filming. But I tweet a lot (@tinselkorey) and keep my website up to date (tinselkorey.com) if readers want to know where the wind blows me :).
